ALLAHABAD: Introduced with the purpose of providing instant money to the bank customers without actually lining up at banks' cashier section, the Automated Teller Machines (ATM) installed at different parts of the city seem to be defeating the very objective for which they were installed.
The regular snags being reported from different localities is creating hardship for customers particularly those from the service class. ATM card holders us the ATM machines to deposit cash, withdrawing cash, cheques and inquiring about the status of their bank accounts.
"However, over the last few days, ATM services in the city have taken a закрытым number of snags reported from different outlets," said a customer, Sandeep Singh.
"There have been occasions, when I had to return empty handed after taking a round of more than a dozen ATM's in my vicinity. While functioning of some of them was stalled due to faulty server, others developed malfunctioning due to failure of card reader, which was unable to read the ATM cards of other banks," he said.
Holding similar views a resident of Mehdauri, Ashok Kumar said,"Keeping in mind the uncertainty about the functioning of the ATMs, I have made it a point to keep some amount of ready cash in safe custody at my house for emergency purpose rather than relying on withdrawing the same from the nearby ATM, which during the last one month has remained out of order most of the time."
Sharing their plight with TOI a section of customers complained that they had a harrowing time when the ATM machine of a scheduled bank installed inside a busy shopping complex in Civil Lines locality developed some technical fault as a result of which it refused to eject the ATM card after the completion of the transaction. Customers not willing to take any chance by leaving the spot without obtaining their card had to wait for more than a hour before the fault could be rectified by the bank officials.
Talking to TOI, a senior bank official, O P Singh said, "The situation has arisen in the wake of installation of ATMs in an indiscriminate manner by banks without making proper arrangements for their proper maintenance and upkeep. This is resulting in regular faults, which the banks are unable to attend on non-working days. Moreover most of the machines lack the facility of displaying the amount of cash remaining inside the ATMs due to which the official have to open each machine everyday and refill the cash without any idea of amount remaining inside the machine."
He added that in majority of the banks, work related to maintenance of ATMs is outsourced to private agencies leaving them at their mercy. The need is to develop an inhouse maintenance mechanism, which would reduce the problem to a large extent.
